Condition

The pictures are less acidic in colour, particularly in the reds, otherwise both catalogue illustrations are representative. The canvases have been relined but the paint surfaces retain a nice impasto. The paint surface of him (as illustrated on the left in the catalogue) is in good overall condition. There is evidence of some minor discoloured retouchings in the background centre right, otherwise the canvas appears to be fine. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the aforementioned retouching and reveals the presence of a thick vanrish as well as some very minor further retouches mainly at the canvas edges. Overall the work that has been carried out appears to be cosmetic as opposed to structural. The paint surface of her (as illustrated on the right in the catalogue) appars to be in good overall condition apart from a recent horizontal tear in the canvas measuring approx. 2 in. lower centre in her dress parallel to the dog. There is also one fleck of old paint loss in the background above the table. Examination under ultraviolet reveals some scattered cosmetic retouching including some older retouching to her blue cape. There is also retouching to two horiztonal surface scratches centre right measuring approx. 4 in. from the canvas edge. Both are offered in matching gilt wood and plaster frames in good overall condition.
