Condition
The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface is in very good overall condition, however there is a thick varnish and some scattred surface dirt overall. Examination under ultrviolet reveals some very minor old cosmetic retoucings in the sky upper right and to the clouds centre left. There is evidence of some very minor retoucing in the foreground but vanrish impedes inspection. However the picture appears to be in good overall untouched condition. Offered in a grand gilt wood and plaster frame in very good condition.

Catalogue Note
The design is based on Bellotto's painting in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, inv. no. 558.1 Bellotto's work in turn derives from Canaletto's Molo looking West, with the Ducal Palace and the Prison in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.2
The Lyon Master is the name given by Charles Beddington to a distinctive hand active in Bellotto's workshop or at the very least in his very close circle.3 The artist rarely appears on the art market and takes his name from the view of Venice of the Grand Canal looking North from the Palazzo Rezzonico to the Palazzo Balbi from circa 1743 in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon, which was formerly thought to be a work securely attributed to Bellotto himself.
We are grateful to Charles Beddington for confirming the attribution on the basis of digital images.

2. See W.G. Constable, Canaletto, Oxford 1962, vo. II, p. 225, cat. no. 85 reproduced vol. I, plate 26.
