Description

  • walnut, gilding
  • each 1m high, 1.90m wide; 3ft. 3½in., 6ft. 2¾in.
the top-rail carved with wreaths and stylised foliage and anthemions above downscrolled arms enclosing a patera, the side-rails with a band of laurel leaves, the seat-rail with an alternating band of bellflowers and anthemions, the side-rails applied with flowerheads, on sabre legs, the backs painted yellow

Condition

In overall good conserved condition. Gilding less greenish more golden and attractive than in the catalogue photograph. Joints sound and sturdy. Very attractive detail to carving. There is some minor darker discolouration on the side-rails due to the use of bronze powder in the past. Old minor marks, chips and scratches commensurate with age and normal useage. On the other sofa, there is a minor crack in the scroll on the arm and another hairline crack and a very minor loss to the carved patera on the same side which are hardly noticeable.

This pair of sofas relate to a suite made for Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (niece of Napoleon I) who married Anatole Nikolaievitch Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, sold Sotheby's sale of the contents of the Villa Demidoff, Florence, on the instructions of S.A.R Il Principe Paolo J. Yugoslavia, 21st-24th April 1969, lot 251 or 252.
