Description

  • Robert Frank
  • 'HALIFAX INFIRMARY'
  • photograph
a unique object, titled and extensively annotated in the negative, signed and dated in ink, etched 'The wind will blow the fire of pain across everyone in time,' and with hand-applied pale blue-gray pigment in the margin, framed, 1978 (variants: The Lines of My Hand, unpaginated; New York to Nova Scotia, p. 71)

Provenance

Acquired from Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York, 1996

Condition

This unique photograph, with hand-applied pigment, possibly photo oils, in the margins, is in essentially excellent condition. The surface of this double-weight print is smooth and glossy, and the print edges are inked. The photographer has inscribed in ink and then etched into the surface the following notation: 'The wind will blow the fire of pain across everyone in time.' When examined closely, a few small creases are visible in the margins and margin corners. The reverse of the print is soiled, likely with deposits from the pigment or ink. On the reverse, 'RF.245.2' and '28' have been written in pencil at the top right corner, and '221' and '67' have been written in pencil at the lower right corner.
