Description

  • Constantin Brancusi
  • THE SLEEPING MUSE
  • Gelatin silver print
reduction notations in pencil on the reverse, circa 1920s (cf. Brancusi: The Photographs, pl. 29)

Condition

This early, slightly warm-toned photograph is on single- to medium-weight paper with a surface sheen. It is in generally good to very good condition. As is typical of Brancusi's prints, evidence of wear from handling is visible when examining this photograph. The photograph is trimmed to the image, there are tack holes in the corners, and there is occasional edge chipping. There are small losses to the tips of the lower left and upper right corners, which appear to have been expertly reconstructed. A 1/2-inch tear extending from the upper edge appears to have been retouched and is reinforced on the reverse of the print. In raking light, small, soft and sharp handling creases, some of which appear to break the emulsion, are visible overall. Several tiny deposits of original retouching are visible upon very close examination. The reverse of the print is faintly soiled. '10 cts,' with directional arrows, is written in pencil on the reverse. The number '60' [in pencil] and an illegible notation [in ink] are also on the reverse.
