Condition

Church Steeple, Cape Cod – This photograph is on lightly textured paper with a surface sheen. Upon close examination, matte swipes are visible across the image, are are tiny deposits of original retouching. The print is trimmed to the image, and the edges are rubbed with attendant minor chipping. The photograph is flush-mounted and mounted again to thin off-white board. The secondary mount is lightly soiled. On the reverse of the mount are the following: stamped 'Original By Dorothy Norman;' the title, date, and 'Sandwich' are in pencil; and Norman has signed in ink. 'DN 289' and 'JJ 33' are in an unidentified hand in pencil. The reverse of the mount is soiled, and there are hinge remnants and a small white sticker in the lower corners. The mount is hinged to a third mount along its upper edge. On the reverse of the third mount are the following: stamped 'Original By Dorothy Norman;' the title and date are in pencil; and Norman has signed in ink. 'American b. 1905,' 'DN 289,' and 'JJ 33' are in an unidentified hand in pencil. The reverse of the third mount is soiled. Gravestone – (Mother) – II, Chatham, Cape Cod – This photograph is on paper with an egg-shell texture and surface sheen. Upon close examination, tiny deposits of original retouching are visible. There is a very small crease to the tip of the upper right corner, which appears to break the emulsion. The print is trimmed to the image, and the edges are rubbed with attendant minor chipping. The photograph is flush-mounted and mounted again to thin off-white board. The mount is appropriately age-darkened at the periphery. On the reverse of the mount are the following: stamped 'Original By Dorothy Norman' and 'For Philadelphia Museum / Collection Dorothy Norman;' titled, dated, and annotated '1GS' in pencil; and with 'DN 223-224' in red crayon and '#120' in blue colored pencil. '1980-89-147' and '(107-1977-147)' written and crossed out in an unidentified hand in pencil. There are abrasions and adhesive remains on the reverse of the mount.
