Condition

Rouen: House of Jeanne d'Arc - This warm-toned platinum print is in generally very good condition. It is trimmed to the image, and there is very minor wear to the edges and at the corners. Upon very close examination, the following are visible in the upper sky area: a tiny, dark, opaque deposit of indeterminate nature; a 1/2-inch crease; and a small deposit, possibly original retouching. The reverse of the print is discolored and darkened, and 'FHE' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. 'Durham Cathedral from the Wear' - This warm-toned platinum print is in generally good to very good condition. There is a shift in tonality in the sky and at the edges of the image. Upon close examination, some faint scuffs and minor evidence of foxing is visible on the image and on the mount. The thin overmat is signed, titled, and dated in ink. It is mounted to a large textured paper mount. The mount is discolored and darkened at the edges. The reverse of the mount is soiled. 'Lincoln Cathedral: Nave, to east' - This gelatin bromide print, on paper with a surface sheen, is in generally good to very good condition. It is somewhat warm-toned and there is a noticeable shift in tonality at the upper and lower edges of the image. In raking light, occasional deposits of original retouching and a few small, soft creases are visible overall. The reverse of the photograph is affixed to a paper overmat with 4 pieces of brown paper tape. The overmat is signed and titled in ink. Abrasions and glue and paper remnants on the overmat suggest that another overmat was previously attached. The overmat is soiled and age-darkened.
