Condition
The oversized print of Moonrise offered here, made in the 1960s, is not only larger than the 16-by-20-inch-format prints that Adams made later in his career, but also even larger than the 20-by-24-inch-format edition commissioned by Lunn Gallery in 1975.
This impressive large print exhibits a wide range of warm tones and high level of detail. It is mounted to Flaxon illustration board and is in generally very good condition. This print has recently undergone conservation, primarily to address occasional impressions and scratches (the longest measuring 3½-inches), most of which appear to have been retouched and filled in. A full treatment report is available upon request from the Photographs department. In raking light, scattered, small hairline scratches and deposits of original retouching are visible overall. The right edge is rubbed. While these issues bear mentioning, they are not immediately apparent when viewing the print normally and do not detract from the overall fine appearance of this important, oversized print.
Aside from insignificant wear from handling and age, the mount is generally clean. The following are written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the mount: 'Adams, Ansel, American, 1902-'; '1970-66-10X'; 'A-2' (circled); and 'Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico.'
