  • Photogravure
large-format photogravure, signed, titled, dated, and inscribed 'For Dorothy Norman - March 25, 1945' in pencil in the margin, 1903, printed in or before 1910; accompanied by the original thin white frame (Greenough 288) (2)

Provenance

The photographer to Dorothy Norman

Gift of Dorothy Norman, 1968

Condition

This striking photogravure is in generally excellent condition. It is very slightly warm-toned, but retains a high level of detail and nuance. The margin edges are age-appropriately darkened. The lower margin corners are creased. Notations in pencil on the reverse of the print are largely illegible.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

This large-format photogravure was made for a planned, but unrealized, portfolio of the photographer’s images of New York City, to be called Fifty Prints of New York.  The print offered here was signed, dated, and inscribed by Stieglitz to his close friend Dorothy Norman in the year before he died.
