ronde, décorée avec les Colombes du Capitole, inscrit au revers : Giacomo Raffaelli / fece / Roma 1792, dans le couvercle d'une tabatière en écaille à montures et doublure en or, poinçon de maître P. Simon, poinçons de contrôle de Paris 1809-1819 et 1819-1838

circular, inlaid with a reduced version of the Capitoline Doves of Pline within a typical, dramatic border, inscribed on the reverse “Giacomo Raffaelli / fece / Roma 1792”, set into the lid of a tortoiseshell snuff box with gold mounts and lining, maker’s mark of P. Simon, Paris control marks for 1809-1819 and 1819-1838

Condition

Plaque: excellent – remarkabley crisp condition Frame: chewed Box: with several chips on base near rim and round upper rims which have been re-glued.

Catalogue Note

Pierre-Marie-Mathieu Simon, garnisseur et bijoutier, insculpa son poinçon pour la première fois en 1810/1811 pour ‘la boîte ronde de forme et toute la garniture’. En 1812, il est installé au 172 rue St-Martin, puis déménage en 1818 au 22 rue Bourg-l’Abbé. C'est à cette adresse qu'il se voit gratifié en 1822 d'un certificat pour cinq ans pour ‘la fabrication de boîtes et tabatières, en buis ou autres matières, ayant la forme des livres’.

Pierre-Marie-Mathieu Simon, garnisseur et bijoutier, first entered a mark for ‘la boîte ronde de forme et toute la garniture’ in 1810/11. He is recorded at 172 rue St-Martin in 1812 moving to 22 rue Bourg-l’Abbé in 1818, also his address in 1822 when he was granted a 5 year patent for ‘la fabrication de boîtes et tabatières, en buis ou autres matières, ayant la forme des livres’.
