Condition

The picture is relined. In general the portrait is in fine condition. There is an uneven varnish applied to the surface, which is thick and milky in the blacks of the right half of the sitters jacket. A few older retouches in his hand are visible, but no major losses or damages are present. The paint has also slightly thinned in the hair of the sitter. Overall though in good state. In a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This portrait of the the English sculptor Joseph Nollekens is an autograph replica by Beechey of the work which now hangs in the Tate Britain, London (ref. N00120).

The commission for the work is explained in a hand written label on the verso of the stretcher. The label repeats a letter from Beechey, dated 16 September 1822, to a "Molly", in which Beechey explains that he is sending her terms for the payment of the painting, while also explaining that he will be retreating to the countryside for a period of at least a month to tend to his health.
