Condition

Picture has a very old relining which has aged well and is quite stable. The picture appears to be in very nice state with no major losses or damages. The picture is under an older high gloss varnish, which when seen under UV renders older retouches underneath nearly invisible. The picture may not have any retouches at all, and there do not appear to be any significant damages when viewed under UV. There are possibly a few small retouches applied along the craquelure. In a carved gilt wood frame.

Edouard Colbert, Marquis de Villacerf (1628-17 October 1699) was a high ranking official in the government of Louis XIV. The nephew of the King's famous Finance Minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, he was appointed Surintendant et Ordonnateur Général des Bâtiments, Arts, Tapisseries et Manufactures de France (Superintendant of Buildings, Arts and Manufactures) on 28 July 1691. This post charged him with the coordination and construction of all official buildings and projects undertaken on behalf of the throne. Additionally, his jurisdiction included the commissioning of all official tapestries, as well as the overseeing of the French Royal academies of painting, sculpture, and architecture.

A large, three quarter length portrait Colbert by Mignard in now at Versailles (cat. no. 3531). That picture is also unsigned, and shows Colbert later in life, and was presented to the Royal Academy of Painting on 4 April 1693 (see L. Nikolenko, Pierre Mignard: The Portrait Painter of the Grand Siecle, Munich 1982, p. 92, plate 26.) This portrait appears to be the source for an engraving by Gérard Edelinck (see fig.1).

1. Examples of the engraving can be found today in the Fogg Museum (inv. R1740) and The Yale Center for British Art (acc. no. B1988.29.25).
