Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Pierluigi Leone de Castris for supporting the attribution to Rubiales, based on photographs. Rubiales was a Spanish born painter who was active in Naples from circa 1548 to 1556. He may also be identified as Francesco Ruviale, who executed a Conversion of St Paul (1545; in situ), an altarpiece in Santo Spirito in Sassia, Rome. If he is indeed the same artist as Ruviale, he also collaborated with Giorgio Vasari for the Palazzo della Cancelleria, Rome (1546) and also probably on the frescoes (1544; in situ) of the Sala del Fregio in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome.
