Catalogue Note
The oval composition of Christ wearing his crown of thorns is most probably related to a painting which Baldinucci describes: 'nostro Signore addolorato, con corona di spine, ed in mano la canna, o, come noi sogliamo dire, un Ecce Homo'.1 A closely similar sketch was on a sheet of studies in the group of drawings by Volterrano sold at Sotheby's in 1980 (see Literature). McCorquodale also mentions other drawings and a print possibly related to paintings of the same subject.
A double-sided sheet of studies of a Madonna and Child with the Infant St. John, which McCorquodale did not relate to a known painting, was also in the 1980 sale, lot 69.
The study of the male nude on the verso may have been intended for one of Volterrano's fresco decorations.
