Description
- Scipione Pulzone
- Portrait of a young nobleman of the Colonna family
- oil on canvas
Provenance
George Encil, Vienna and the Bahamas.
Literature
N. Barbanti-Grimaldi in Experience and Adventures of a Collector, Paris 1989, p. 86 (as Scipione Pulzone).
Condition
The canvas has a fairly recent relining which is stable although a little stiff and has resulted in a flattening of the paint surface. There are no major damages, though in the lower left, on the velvet table cloth, there are two small restorations. The gilding on the hilt of the sword and the bird are partially worn, more so on the bird. An inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small retouchings and restorations throughout although none of them are major. The paint surface overall is somewhat flat but unaffected by any major damages.
Sold with a gilt frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Both the comb and the embossed gilt decoration on the helmet bear the distinctive column of the Colonna coat of arms. The helmet, a parade burgonet, may be dated to around 1580-1600, and both the sword and the dagger a little later to the period 1590 - 1630. The most likely identity of the sitter therefore is probably Francesco Colonna, Prince of Carognano and Duke of Bassanello (d.1636), the second son of Giulio Cesare Colonna, Prince of Palestrina, who saw active service for the Spanish in the wars in Flanders in the 1590s.
