Condition

The colours are fresher and the painting less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration woul dsuggest. Both canvases have been lined. The first (illustrated at the top of the page): the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition except for what appears to be retouching to an old restored U-shaped tear in the grass lower right as can be seen under a raking light and a further small tear is directly below. There is evidence of an old discoloured varnish visible in the lighter pigments and there is a craquelure overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals scattered minor cosmetic retouching to the leaves and some minor strengthening to the figures. There is retouching to the aforementioned tears as well as further retouching to an old area of damage measuring approx. 1 in in diameter directly above rthe right most man's head. There is also retoucing to an old restored upside down L-shaped tear in the lower centre measuring approx. 8 in. which runs through the child's outstretched arm. There is also minor retouching to a small vertical tear running approx. 3 in. from the top most canvas edge. There is also minor retoucing to an old stretcher bar mark centre left. The second (illustrated at the bottom of the page): The paint surface is in good overall condition. Some of the pigements are a little thin in places, probably as a result of the relining. There is surface sdirt and a discoloured varnish overall. There is an old crease in the upper centre running from the top canvas edge measuring approx. 10 in. but only visible under a raking light. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of a thick varnish which makes inspection difficult. UV reveals a few very minor scattered cosmetic retouches overall except for the sky upper left where there has been retoucing to two old areas of damage around what loks like a restored diagonal tear running between the left most edge and the top edge. Overall the damage has been well restored and the pictures are in good ready to hang condition. Offered in matching gilt wood and plaster frames in good overall condition.
