Condition

The picture is more yellow in tone and richer in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest, The canvas is unlined and the paint surface is in good overall condition. There is no apparent damage or loss of paint except for two very minor single abrasions at the top of the head and some further abrasion to the canvas edge lower right as can all be seen in the catalogue illustration. The paint is thin in places as can be seen particularly in the darker pigments and under a raking light there is evidence of retouching to the fleshtones of the decolletage. There is a discoloured vanrish overall. Examination under ultrviolet light confirms the presentce of the milky varnish which makes inspection difficult and reveals minor strenghening to the hair and some localised cosmetic retouching to the sitter's neck, left cheek and right eyebrow as well as to the aforementioned decolletage. There is also some strengthening to the drapery of the costume and to the lower canvas edge. The picture appears to be in good overall condition with no structural damage. Offered in a decorative gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.
