Description

  • Time revealing Truth
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has a relining which has not overly flattened the paint surface, though the small squares of the canvas can be made out distinctly on the surface. The painting is dirty and under a discoloured varnish. To the naked eye it is apparent that there are quite extensive if localised old losses and retouchings. The paint is beginning to lift in areas and some scattered losses are visible. The edges of the canvas were once folded over but with the relining the canvas has been returned to its original size. The result, however, is that along the upper edge (12 cm) and along the sides (5 cm each) there is a crack in the paint surface from where the canvas was unfolded. Along the lower edge (10 cm) the fold is visible though thoguh the surface has not cracked. Overall the paint surface would very much benefit from restoration. While the surface is in large stretches in fair condition for a work of its size, extensive retouchings and losses are present. Unframed.
