Condition

The catalogue illustrations are representative. The relinings from 30/40 years ago are still good. To the naked eye the paintings appear a little dirty but in fair condition: though sunken in some of the darker tones and with some small localised losses, large areas are in good original condition with the brushwork still fresh. UV light reveals scattered retouchings, mostly in the darker tones. Offered in rippled black frames with some knocks and old worm holes.

Catalogue Note

The composition of the Dinner at Emmaus was repeated several times by the Bassano workshop while the design of Christ in the house of Mary and Martha is a variant in reverse after Jacopo and Francesco Bassano's signed original in the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation in Houston, Texas (inv. no. 79.13). The execution and colouring are different to the more usual adaptations of these compositions and suggest that the works may be by a foreign artist.
