Condition

The catalogue illustrations are representative. The relinings from the second half of the 20th century are still taut. To the naked eye the paintings appear dirty and in fair condition. Some of the darker tones are have become sunken but no major damages are apparent. UV light reveals scattered retouchings, bu the true extent of these is not clear due to the thick varnish. the paintings would benefit from a clean. Offered in later carved wooden frames with minor knocks.

Catalogue Note

The former is a copy after Noah Leading the Animals on to the Ark given to both Jacopo and Francesco Bassano in a private collection in Milan (see A. Ballarin, Jacopo Bassano, Padua 1995, vol. I, tome II, p. 469A). The latter is a copy after Jacopo Bassano's signed original from 1574 in the Bildergalerie in Potsdam (ibid, p. 475, a detail reproduced in colour vol. I, tome I, fig. 126). Variants of both compositions given by Ballarin to Jacopo's studio are in the Archepiscopal Palace at Kromeriz, Czech Republic (ibid., pp. 464-65). A variant of Noah's Sacrifice After the Flood (125 by 176 cm.) by Francesco was sold in these Rooms, 3 July 1991, lot 69, for £30,000.
