Description

  • John Glover
  • A view of Keswick, in the Lake District, Cumberland
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Acquired, prior to the 1930s, by the grandfather of the present owner.

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative and the painting appears to be in very good condition. There is one small chip in the paint, centre left, and some minor frame abrasion to the edge, in the lower centre, but otherwise there are no signs of extant damage or loss of paint. There are some visible pentimenti around the figures in the foreground. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered minor retouching in the sky, especially one concentrated area in the centre, approximately 1 inch squared, with related satellite retouchings, and two smaller concentrated areas right of centre. There is the scattered and uneven remains of an old, slightly opaque varnish in the lower section of the painting, especially in the darker areas of the foliage, and a small triangle of retouching in the centre right, just to the left of the cottage in the trees on the extreme right edge. The picture is held in a gilt wood frame with stylised scallop shells in the corners. Catalogue Note

Glover had a house at Blowick Farm near Patterdale, at the foot of Ullswater Lake, and spent much of his time in the Lake District. He was so fond of the region that, when in Tasmania, where he settled from 1831, he reminiscently named his house Patterdale.

Another version of this composition by Glover was sold by Sotheby's Australia on 7 May 2007, in the sale of Important Australian Art including works from the Qantas Collection, lot 106.
