Description

  • Thomas Hudson
  • Portrait of a Lady in Van Dyck dress
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The painting appears to be in good condition and is brighter than the catalogue illustration suggests, and the reds stronger. The canvas has a firm lining, however the surface of the paint has not been abraded and there are no extant damages of losses of paint. There is an old, discoloured, and opaque varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals an almost vertical line of old retouching running from the sitter's wrist to the bottom edge of the canvas. There are also a small number of very minor flecks of retouching in the sitter's bodice, one in the background upper right and along the upper edge of the canvas, where it meets the frame. Otherwise the painting appears to be largely untouched and in very good condition. Held in a carved and gilded British Baroque frame.
