Description
- Giuseppe Cesari, called Il Cavalier d'Arpino
- The Lamentation
- signed lower right: Joseph . Arpin...?
- oil on copper
Provenance
Harry Beyer, Munich.
Condition
The signed panel has slight wave in the copperplate, which is noticeable to touch and does not disturb visually.
The paint is in very good condition, with many areas of wonderful impasto still intact, like on the sleeve of the lady bending to kiss Christ's feet, the vegetation in the lower left corner, and the drapery on which theb ody of Christ lies. The colours are still rich and contrast effectively with the deathly palour of Christ's body.
Inspection under UV light reveals re-strengthening to the folds in the clothing of the figures in the right background, spot retouchings to a few darker details in the foreground figures, and along Christ's body. All these repairs have all been very evenly applied and are not detectable with the naked eye. There are spot retouchings along the edges of the panel, and a small retouching in the lower left corner.
This lot is sold in a heavy wooden frame, in good condition, and is ready to hang.
