Hans Meitner, Vienna, by September 1925.

Condition

This signed work is in very good condition with no sign of flaking or distress. The panel is cradled and appears to be very stable and flat. There are two areas of retouching visible under ultraviolet light: a horizontal line measuring approximately 30 cm, located about 17 cm from the upper edge and extending from the left hand side. This has been well-repaired and follows a natural contour between two dark tones in the background, and so is not disturbing to the naked eye. The second repaired damage is a vertical line measuring about 30 cm extending down from the upper edge to the right of the wine glass. A tiny area of cosmetic repair lower left corner and to the left and above the crabs. All the above mentioned work is confined to darker background paint and does not affect the colourful and detailed fruit and tableware which make up the centrepiece of this wonderful still life. In this area there is only a small strip of retouching on the cut open lemon, visible under ultraviolet light. The lot is displayed in a loan frame.
