Description
- German School, circa 1540
- Portrait of a cleric, half length, holding a rosary
- oil on panel, shaped top
Condition
The panel support consist of a single uncut and uncradled oak panel, which has a very slight convex bow. The painting is now a little dirty and the varnish layer a little yellowed. The paint surface is in beautiful fresh condition for a panel of this date. The flesh tones are almost entirely intact and the only old restoration detectable under ultra violet is to some strengthening of the folds of the black coat and to some old losses in the upper left and upper right background. The outline of a hat originally worn by the sitter can be discerned in the paint layers.
This lot is offered in a later parcel gilt and painted wood frame in good condition.

The dendrochronology report (dated October 2012, available from the department) for this intriguing portrait suggests a felling date of circa 1530. The panel is derived from a tree sourced in the eastern Baltic.
