Description
- After Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto
- Venice, a view of the church of San Geremia and the entrance to Canneregio from the Grand Canal
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 8 April 1992, lot 103, where acquired by the present owner for £14,000.
Condition
The canvas has quite recently been reliend and restretched. The painting is in very good overall condition with no major damages or signs of wear. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals only scattered cosmetic retouchings, for example some washing in to the darker parts of the clouds in the sky, and minor strengthenings in the reflections in the water or detaisl of the buildings. The only damage of any note is a repaired vertical 3cm loss on the top of the waterfront wall on the left hand side. The restoration has not discoloured and the varnish remains clear and even, and the picture should not require further attention.
This lot is offered with a later gilt wood Regency style frame in good condition.
