Description

  • Giovanni Battista Cimaroli
  • A landscape at the outskirts of a town with a peasant driving his cattle along a river bank
  • oil on canvas
  • 34.3 by 44.5cm.; 13½ by 17½in.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 26 March 1971, lot 127, for £850 (as Zais).

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas was probably relined in the 1970s but this process does not seem to have overly flattened the paint surface which is secure but a little dirty. Inspection under UV light reveals quite extensive retouching in the sky which are beginning to discolour a little and some further scattered areas in the foreground. Offered in a carved wooden frame in good condition but with some surface knocks.
