Description

  • The Supper at Emmaus
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has a heavy old relining, which has somewhat pressed the paint surface. The painting itself is now very dirty and covered in a thick layer of heavily discoloured varnish. There is an old seam or join in the canvas running horizontally across just above the level of the table top. There is a fairly recent hole in the centre of the canvas, clearly visible in the catalogue illustration. The thickness of the varnish completely deflects assessment under ultra violet light. Nevertheless a fair degree of old damage and repair can be discerned: old lacunae can be made out in the centre, around and below the hands of Christ and again on his chest and right arm. A vertical trail of old repairs runs down between the shoulder of Christ and the figure to his right, and similarly the raised hand of the other man and the space between his head and that of Christ has been repaired, as has the top of his shoulder. In many parts the paint layer has become very worn - this is particularly evident around the head of the man on the left, and to a lesser extent in the hair and beard of his companion. Other repairs are too scattered or too small to detect easily, although two old losses of about 2 x 2 cm are visible in the upper centre and on the fold of the tablecloth. This lot is offered with a prcel filt wood frame with numerous small chips and losses.
