Valerius Röver (L.2984b), his numbering in pen and brown ink: 37 and 10 and possibly his old attribution, verso: Tintoret
Condition
Hinged to the mount at the upper margin. There are a number of tears/cracks in the paper. At the upper margin in the centre the sheet has a few tears and a piece of paper has been added for support on the verso. There are areas where the ink has sunk into the paper and there are a number of creases in the sheet. The paper overall is quite fragile and brittle. Scattered foxing throughout - not too prominent. The sheet has suffered somewhat however the overall image is still strong and the medium has remained relatively fresh.

Catalogue Note
Whilst we know of other drawings and paintings in which Turchi has treated the subject of The Lamentation, it has not been possible to connect the present sheet with any of his known surviving work. However, the manner in which the eyes have been drawn here, deep in their sockets, is very typical of his style. It is also possible to see the influence of both Palma Giovane and Tintoretto.
