Catalogue Note
This drawing can be dated to the middle of the 1770s and is a fine example of Gainsborough’s draughtsmanship of that decade. With a combination of bold lines, complex layering of coloured chalks and subtly applied watercolour washes, Gainsborough presents a mythical landscape of great tranquillity.
John Hayes notes that Gainsborough’s Wooded Landscape with Building1 (The Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide) should be seen as a companion to the present sheet. Preserved on the same buff-coloured mount, it too was offered for sale at Christie's, London on 19th November 1968. The present drawing also relates closely to Wooded Landscape with Figure, Lime Kiln and Farm Building, a work from the late 1770s, that was formerly in the collection of the late Michael Ingram.2
