Catalogue Note

Little is known about the life and work of Gerardus van Veen, and his drawings are rare.  Like his brother, Rochus van Veen (circa 1640-1693), by whom a larger number of drawings are known, he was exceptionally skilful in refined natural history illustrations in watercolour.  Dated drawings by Gerardus are known from between 1643 and 1678; a Robin (1669) is in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. no. T083), and a Standing Ruff(1677) is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. no. 86.GG.15).

This drawing was once part of the remarkable, large collection of natural history drawings that belonged to Dr. F.P.L. Pollen (1842-1886), who in the years 1862-66 contributed significantly to the zoological exploration of Madagascar.
