Catalogue Note

See note to the previous lot.  A large version of this view, also in the Blaauw collection, bears an inscription ‘buyten aleppo’, which may date from the time of the Jonas Witsen sale in 1790. Although it remains unproven that this view is indeed near Aleppo, if it is, this is an even rarer view than Alexandria among drawings made at first hand by 17th-century artists.
