Catalogue Note
In this intriguing drawing, the central kneeling figure corresponds more or less exactly to that in Rembrandt's study, in Berlin, for the figure group immediately to Christ's right in the Hundred Guilder Print. The standing figure in the present drawing also bears a clear resemblance to the largely obscured rightmost background figure in the Berlin drawing, but the other figures are all different. The most likely explanation is that the drawing is by a pupil who was working in Rembrandt's studio around the time (circa 1647-48) when he made the Berlin drawing, and who borrowed one of the master's figures for his own composition.
