Provenance

By descent through the Olivier family

Exhibited

London, Royal Institute Galleries, War Groups, Portraits and other Paintings, 1935, no. 224

Condition

Oil on canvas, unlined. The canvas is very coarse and somewhat slack on the stretcher. The picture surface is in generally very good condition aside from surface dirt and some minor frame abrasions along the extreme edges. There is also some minor pigment separation across the picture surface, especially in the lower left quadrant and around the city in the sea. Under UV light, there is a dot of inpainting in the upper left corner and lines of repaint to address the separation in the lower left quadrant. There are areas and dashes of fluorescence that seem to be glazes and pigments added by the artist as they fluoresce over the varnish.
