Condition
Oil on canvas, lined. The picture surface is bright and clean with a shiny varnish. Old craquelure and stretcher bar marks visible under retouchings. Under UV light small dashes and dots of in painting visible across the composition.

Catalogue Note
The present work is attributed to Captain Thomas C. Robertson, a sea captain and maritime artist whose paitings are visual records of Australian and New Zealand maritime life of the 19th century. Born in Scotland in 1819, Robertson emigrated to Australia in 1853. From 1860 onwards, he was the master of the clipper-ship 'Lightning' on the Sydney - New Zealand run and he showed at artist's unions from 1863. He emigrated to Japan in 1871, where he died in 1873.
