Condition

Bird at Left: Lined canvas. Surface dirt and a thick, shiny varnish. Under UV light: thick, uneven, masking varnish. Scattered spots of retouching and strengthening of the darks visible over the varnish. Bird at Right: Lined canvas. Surface dirt and a thick, shiny varnish. Under UV light: thick, uneven, masking varnish. Lines of inpainting extending 1 inch below the top edge and 1 inch from the right and left edges may address a previous folding of the canvas or abrasion from an earlier stretcher bar.
