Catalogue Note

This composition is based on a slightly smaller autograph work by Giuseppe Cesari, now in a Roman private collection (88.5 by 119 cm.; see see H. Röttgen, Il cavalier Giuseppe Cesari D'Arpino, Un grande pittore nello splendore della fama e nell' incostanza della fortuna, Rome 2002, p. 415, cat. no. 177). While the subject matter has been debated, Röttgen proposes that the work depicts Jupiter, accompanied by the eagle, chasing Juno, represented by the crab at her feet.
