Catalogue Note
When the present lot was sold in 1996, Dr. Ursula Härting confirmed, based on photographs, that the work was by Frans Francken and dated it to circa 1600.
The subject is derived from Ovid (cf. Metamorphoses 1-89 passim), who described the world after its creation. The Golden Age was this first era when man lived in perfect harmony with himself and nature, an arcadian age of eternal spring.
