Description
- Pietro Malombra
- The Doge and Senators in the Sala del Collegio, Palazzo Ducale, Venice
- inscribed on the ceiling: CVSTO/DES LIBER/TATIS
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Lady"), London, Christie's, 14 December 1984, lot 229 (as attributed to Malombra).
Condition
Oil on canvas. Painting has been relined and surface has been pressed. There are abrasions to much of the paint surface, especially noticeable in the darks. Details in the ceiling and framed paintings still read well. There are some crudely repaired punctures that are visible to the naked eye: one on the side of the choir stall at right side, another in the picture frame at upper right, and another smaller one at middle left. Examination under UV reveals retouching along a vertical crease or seam that runs down center. Retouching to repaired punctures as mentioned above. Other scattered retouches and reinforcements of the darker pigments are scattered throughout.

Catalogue Note
Pietro Malombra was the first painter to represent the interior of the Sala del Collegio in the Doge's Palace; eight versions of the present painting exist, showing meetings in the magnificent hall. The prime version, now in the Prado, Madrid, was brought to Spain as a gift by the Ambassador to Venice, Don Alfonso della Queva and the present painting is closest to this in style, composition and quality.
Malombra pioneered this style of historical interior scenes, intended to document a specific scene and accurately represent the surroundings. Indeed Venturi indicates a distinctly Flemish influence in the minutiae of Malombra's decorative detail; and with the prime Sala del Colegio canvas began a style of painting which soon infused throughout Venice.1
