Seized from the above by Hitler’s agents and allocated in the central depot of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. D.G.5), where it was reserved for the Führermuseum;
Transferred to Alt Ausse (inv. no. 2604) for the Kunstmuseum Linz (inv. no. 2637);
Recovered by the Allied Forces and sent to the Munich Central Collecting Point (inv. no. 3867);
Given over to the Austrian Government Kremsmünster depot (inv. no. 1325);
Restituted to David Goldmann;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

Oil on canvas; there is an old glue relining. The paint surface has been pressed and abraded throughout. Areas of the ground are showing through, mostly noticeable in the darks. Under UV light: some old retouches and inpaints to craquelure in face, collar and fur. There is a more recent retouching on top of the old varnish in background at upper left and one or two others scattered. Offered in a carved brown wood frame with gilt inner and outer edges.
