Catalogue Note
The identification of the sitter is based on the coat of arms at upper left, which bear a strong relationship to those of Pope Gregory XIII. The arms appear to be those of Jacopo Boncompagni, Duke of Sora, Aquino, Arce and Arpino, and Marquess of Vignola, born in 1548, the son of Ugo Boncompagni, later Pope Gregory XIII (1502-85) and his mistress Maddalena Fulchin. Jacopo was legitimized by his father the year he was born and went on to become a patron of the arts and culture.
