Condition

This painting has not been lined. The surface is good condition aside from some frame abrasion around the perimeter with minor associated paint loss. Under UV, an arc of restoration fluoresces in the sky, likely to address a previous scratch, and there is another 2" square touch-up on the coastline to the left of the figure.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

The Countess de la Maitrie is modeling with her dachshund in front of the Saint-Malo Bay in Brittany, evoking her family's affiliation to this French region. Her elegant dress, and the inclusion of specific accessories such as her gloves, cane and the dog's leash, demonstrate a sophistication that connects her to Walhain 's other society portraits, notably of the Duc Charles-Philippe d'Orléans. The artist was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Auguste-Barthélemy Glaize, and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1897.
