Condition

The canvas is not lined. The painting is slightly bowing away from frame at all four corners. The surface is in generally good condition aside for a somewhat dirty varnish and craquelure throughout. Frame abrasions noticeable left, top, and right sides. Small loss/flake at 23 in. from left, 18 in. from top. Discoloration and accretions noticeable in lower right quadrant. Under UV; retouch on the vase to the right approximately 5 in. from top, possible repaired tear; minor scattered retouches in the background and along the edges to address frame abrasion.

Catalogue Note

Antoine Vollon attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (1850-1852). He moved to Paris in 1859 and met the realist painters François Bonvin and Théodule Ribot, who encouraged him to paint genre and still-life scenes. In 1863 he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés and in 1865 at the Salon where he showed his work every year until 1880. He became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1897.
