Condition

The canvas has a nice old lining. Two test cleans removing very brown varnish. Some paint loss at top edge; area of paint loss near Saint Joseph's ear and below his beard; craquelure occasionally apparent; two horizonal cracks from left to right probably from folding. Otherwise in generally good condition. Under UV; thick old varnish; possible old repainting addressing aforementioned vertical cracks and in lower left quadrant.

Catalogue Note

The present composition, Vanni's most famous, is known through at least three replicas, the probable prime version of which was formerly in the Orlandini collection, Siena, and today in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery (acc. no. 2003.22.1). Known extant replicas are in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 707; in reverse and possibly a workshop replica); the J.B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville; and the Galleria Nazionale, Parma.
