Catalogue Note

Donated by Olivetti S.p.A

Ettore Sottsass' legendary "Valentine" portable typewriter - which comes in its original red carrying case - is perfectly suited for the (RED) Auction. One of the most famous examples of 1960s Italian design (and a quintessential favourite in MoMA's Architecture and Design gallery), this typewriter bears witness to the time when Olivetti was leading the way in industrial design. From our own vantage, it is the pre-digital precursor to the Macbook, as emblematic of style as it was of mobility. "Valentine" is a love letter to playful design.
