Catalogue Note

This list of Verdi's paintings is apparently unpublished; it affords an unusual insight into Verdi's interest in Fine Art.  Boldini painted his famous portrait of Verdi in Paris in 1886, the final version now in the Galleria dell'arte moderna, Rome.  Boldini also made an early version in oils, referred to here, presented to the composer in 1893, which the composer hung in his apartment in the Palazzo Doria in Genoa.  Together with the bust by Gemito, it is one of the classic images of the composer.  For a letter to the painter Domenico Morelli, see lot 261.
