Catalogue Note

The Medici intermedii of 1589 ("La pellegrina") were of the greatest importance in the development of music and drama that lead to Italian Baroque opera (see Pirotta), and included music by Marenzio, de' Cavalieri and others.

The intermedi described in this volume had music by Emilio de' Cavalieri, Cristofano Maluezzi of Lucca, Luca Marenzio (the latter two to words by Ottavio Rinuccini) and Giulio Caccini (to words by Giovambattista Strozzi). The canto on p.50 of this text, Io che dal ciel farei cader la luna, was sung during the festivities by Caccini's wife, Lucia Gagnolanti. The third intermedio, by Rinuccini, was later adapted by him as the opening scene for his operatic text Dafne, the first opera libretto.
