Catalogue Note

This is an attractive song dating from Poulenc's maturity.  It was published with the dedication to Geneviève Touraine as the first of Trois chansons de F. García Lorca (Paris: Heugel, 1947 (where it is dated "summer 1947"). Lorca's poem is "El niño mudo" from Canciones. 1921-1924, no.9 ('Trasmundo'). Poulenc admitted to Bernac that he found it difficult to render the subtlety of Lorca's poems ("...mais j'en sortirai...").  The composer described this song as having something of the "artless" simple manner of Debussy, without claiming to match that genius.
