Catalogue Note
Le Traité pour viole is one of the most important source-books for the history and construction of the viola da gamba. Jean Rousseau (1644-1699), who was one of the most distinguished viol players of the seventeenth century, propounds an innovative approach to the left-hand positions and refutes contemporary attacks on unharmonized compositions for the viol (TNG, xxi, p.800).
