Catalogue Note
Apparently unpublished: not in Hans Busch, Verdi's 'Otello' and 'Simon Boccanegra' (revised edition) in Letters and Documents, 2 volumes (1988).
Alberto Ghislanzoni (1824-1893) was the librettist of Aida and the revised La forza del destino. Verdi did not finally agree to rewrite Simon Boccanegra (which had had only limited success in 1857) for La Scala until January 1881. Ricordi arranged for Arrigo Boito to adapt the new text, as a prelude to undertaking the far greater task of writing Otello. The revised Boccanegra was staged at La Scala on 24 March 1881.
